The Top Companies for Women in Tech

1.83k

“Women love their work, but if they don’t see career advancement, it is a reason for them to leave,” says Telle Whitney, president and CEO of the Anita Borg Institute (ABI), an organization with a full roster of programs to help women grow, learn and develop their highest potential. “It’s time to move beyond just talking about the problem of gender diversity in tech and change the focus to what companies can do to increase the representation of women technologists.”

ABI’s 2016’s Top Companies for Women Technologists Leadership Index reveals that women held 21.7 percent of technical roles among the 60 companies evaluated, a 0.9 percent increase from previous years at all levels – entry, mid, senior and executive. However, jobs for women at the senior and executive levels continued to lag behind entry-level jobs, demonstrating a ‘promotion gap.’ This trend fueled turnover rates among women in the tech industry.

Whitney believes the first steps to improving turnover rates are for companies to set rigorous goals and implement diversity and leadership training programs. She should know – the ABI has focused on the advancement of women in computing since its founding in 1997, and currently has 100,000 technologists looking to be change agents as part of its membership.
High-performing companies on the index have policies and programs that support women in the workplace, including flex time, maternity and paternity leave, leadership development for mid-career and executive-level employees and gender diversity training.
