UNESCO Creates STEM Curriculum

872

The return to school may look a bit different across the globe this autumn – whether it’s the physical environment through implementing remote learning, or curriculum adjustments made to accommodate social distancing. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has compiled a list of online education resources designed to help incorporate STEM into your curriculum.

According to UNESCO, an estimated 1.37 billion students are learning from home because of COVID-19 safety measures, making online learning essential. Teachers and parents do not have to take on teaching responsibilities alone.

These free online resources “provide coding challenges for all ages, mathematical problems and solutions, and a variety of experiments, instructions, descriptions, guides, magazines, as well as interactive opportunities with scientists via Skype” according to UNESCO.

Across the globe, especially in underprivileged areas, UNESCO has been operating in collaboration with field offices. The UNESCO office in Brazzaville and Harare have each been equipped with 3D printers and have the necessary capability to conduct workshops using the online resources provided.

Tools, such as Zoom, can be used to conduct webinars by Experts or by Educators to walk through the instructions with their class.

UNESCO’s objective is to increase the interest of young people, especially girls, in scientific disciplines that stimulate critical thinking, innovation, and problem-solving skills.
